Understanding our Class Level System

The listed ages are just recommendations and don’t need to be followed exactly. Placement will focus more on skill level than age, unless a class specifically states an age requirement. If there’s no indicated age or level, it is an open class.

Ballet Levels

Pre-Ballet (Ages 3–5)

  • Introduction to ballet through creative movement, games, and storytelling.
  • Focus on posture, coordination, musicality, and following directions.
  • Exposure to basic ballet vocabulary and classroom etiquette.

Ballet 1 (Ages 6–8)

  • Introduction to the five basic positions of the feet and arms.
  • Simple barre and center work to develop balance and strength.
  • Emphasis on body alignment, rhythm, and graceful movement.

Ballet 2 (Ages 8–10)

  • More structured barre work with increased repetitions and combinations.
  • Introduction to basic turns (piqué, chainé) and small jumps.
  • Greater focus on turnout, flexibility, and musical phrasing.

Ballet 3 (Ages 10–13)

  • Strengthening of technique with longer, more complex barre exercises.
  • Introduction to grand allegro (big jumps) and pirouette preparation.
  • Stronger emphasis on coordination between upper and lower body.
  • For some, beginning pointe preparation with teacher approval.

Beginning Adult Ballet (Ages 16+)

  • Designed for adult beginners with little to no prior training.
  • Introduction to ballet vocabulary, posture, and class structure.
  • Gentle focus on flexibility, coordination, and enjoyment of movement.

Ballet 3 (Teen–Adult Intermediate)

  • Advanced barre exercises emphasizing precision, speed, and strength.
  • Full pirouettes, multiple turns, and more demanding allegro work.
  • Development of artistry, expression, and stage presence.
  • Pointe work for dancers with the necessary strength and readiness.

Ballet 4 (Teen–Adult Advanced)

  • Professional-level combinations requiring endurance, control, and artistry.
  • Complex turns, extended adagio, and grand allegro sequences.
  • Strong focus on musical interpretation, nuance, and performance quality.
  • Pointe work includes advanced variations and repertoire.

Modern Dance Levels

Creative Movement / Intro to Modern (Ages 5–7)

  • Exploration of natural movement, shapes, and dynamics.
  • Use of storytelling and improvisation to build confidence.
  • Introduction to basic modern dance principles like contraction and release.

Modern 1 (Ages 8–10)

  • Introduction to foundational techniques (Graham, Horton, Limon basics).
  • Learning floor patterns, weight shifts, and use of breath.
  • Building awareness of space and rhythm.

Modern 2 (Ages 10–13)

  • More intricate floor work and across-the-floor sequences.
  • Emphasis on dynamics, body articulation, and emotional expression.
  • Introduction to partnering and choreographic exploration.

Beginning Adult Modern (Ages 16+)

  • Entry-level class for adults new to modern dance.
  • Focus on natural movement, basic floor work, and rhythm.
  • Emphasis on expression and building confidence without pressure.

Modern 3 (Teen–Adult Intermediate)

  • Increased physicality with demanding floor, center, and traveling work.
  • Emphasis on strength, fluidity, and transitions between levels of space.
  • Introduction to advanced improvisation and compositional techniques.

Modern 4 (Teen–Adult Advanced)

  • Mastery of multiple modern techniques with seamless integration.
  • Complex choreography requiring stamina, precision, and artistry.
  • Development of individuality and professional-level performance quality.

Jazz Dance Levels

Jazz Basics (Ages 6–8)

  • Fun, upbeat introduction to jazz through simple isolations and walks.
  • Focus on rhythm, coordination, and musical play.
  • Short, age-appropriate combinations.

Jazz 1 (Ages 8–10)

  • Building foundational skills: kicks, single turns, basic leaps.
  • Greater focus on posture, control, and musical timing.
  • Learning to perform with energy and style.

Jazz 2 (Ages 10–13)

  • Development of double turns, higher kicks, and more stylized footwork.
  • Increased strength, flexibility, and endurance training.
  • More complex choreography with varied dynamics.

Beginning Adult Jazz (Ages 16+)

  • A fun, welcoming class for adult beginners.
  • Introduction to jazz fundamentals: isolations, basic turns, and leaps.
  • Focus on building rhythm, style, and confidence.

Jazz 3 (Teen–Adult Intermediate)

  • Faster-paced combinations incorporating multiple turns and advanced leaps.
  • Emphasis on musicality, performance quality, and stylistic range (classic jazz, contemporary jazz, commercial styles).
  • Building versatility across choreographic styles.

Jazz 4 (Teen–Adult Advanced)

  • Professional-level combinations with high stamina demands.
  • Emphasis on precision, fluid transitions, and expressive artistry.
  • Mastery of multiple jazz styles and adaptability for performance or auditions.
